What makes a “fishroom”?

It might seem that the obvious answer to the title of this post is any room that contains fish tanks. Does that mean if you have tanks in multiple rooms that you have multiple fish rooms? Or is it a single room containing nothing but fish tanks, or only used for fish tanks?

I have often pondered this question for a variety of reasons. I also suspect there are multiple definitions, depending on you ask. While I have labeled the room where all my tanks are located a fishroom, it isn’t in the normal, hobbyist sense.

All of my tanks are located in my basement. Many hobbyists keep fish tanks in their basement, so nothing new there. However, most of the basement fishrooms I have seen are unfinished and lined with racks of tanks. My basement is finished. It has carpet, furniture, a TV, a refrigerator, etc. Carpet in a fishroom, you ask? Indeed, and not ideal.

Because my tanks all reside in livable space where I host guests, watch TV, and relax, I don’t want the space looking like a fish store with tanks stacked everywhere. As such, I prefer the space be clean and uncluttered. This works great except to achieve all of that, it’s important that the tanks all look like show tanks. That is why all of the tanks have their own stand and all the stands are commercial, meaning I bought them rather than built them.

Also, my basement has a “foyer,” which is not carpeted. It has LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring. Four of my tanks are in the foyer, and the rest are in the carpeted section.

I posted a diagram of my basement in February. However, there have been numerous changes to the tanks listed. There are still 10 tanks total, but the 75g has been replaced with a 45g, and some of the tank occupants are different. Nonetheless, in general conversation I don’t refer to my basement as a fishroom. I just call it the basement den…where I have fish. 🙂

So what is the correct answer? There is no correct answer. A fishroom is whatever you want it to be and to mean.
