Have a general interest in Lake Tanganyika cichlids? In late 2020, the Journal of Great Lakes Research published a great article titled “The taxonomic diversity of the cichlid fish fauna of ancient Lake Tanganyika, East Africa.”
Yes this article is in a scientific journal, however it’s not like typical scientific articles because, 1) it is publicly available and, 2) it is much easier to read and digest than most scholarly publications. It is chock-full of fantastic information for any Tanganyikan cichlid enthusiast. Specifically, it explores the complexity of the lake’s taxonomic diversity.

The authors conclude that there are at least 241 cichlid species in the lake, 239 of which are endemic. Included in the article is a very nice table listing all 208 described (valid) species with scientific name and type locality.
Give it a read and learn about the many cichlid tribes, where they’re found in the lake, etc.
