Getting the opportunity to capture a piece of a hobbyist’s cichlid journey is a privilege that I don’t take lightly. And today’s interviewee, Mike Helford, has had quite the journey.

To numerous fish hobbyists, the Web is a great tool. We have probably all performed online searches looking for information about different species, hardware, fish food, and everything else. As I recall, I first learned about today’s interviewee as my fish keeping journey was just getting started. In fact, I believe I learned about Rick Borstein while searching for fish profiles. Fast forward to the present and I reached out to him about doing an interview.

Each year, the American Cichlid Association convention hosts fantastic speakers. The July 2024 edition in Cincinnati Ohio was no exception. In fact, I was able to snag an interview with one of the speakers who I had tried to get a few years prior (Dr. Ron Coleman). I also had the opportunity to talk to another speaker, Dr. Sam Borstein, who did an interview for the blog many years ago.

Ever been to the Ohio Cichlid Association’s (OCA) annual Extravaganza? Ever heard of it? If you answered no to either of those questions, you’re missing out. Held every November just before Thanksgiving near Cleveland, Ohio, it is a fantastic cichlid event, on par with the annual American Cichlid Association (ACA) convention. If you have attended an Extravaganza, then you have to know Don Danko.
