When it comes to cichlids, Lake Victoria and its satellite waters have a story to tell. A fantastic website just launched that helps tell it.
Though still being developed, Victoria Basin Cichlids already goes into great detail about numerous subjects surrounding the Lake Victoria basin. This includes wetlands, estuaries, and other satellite waters such as Lake Kyoga, Lake Edward, and Lake George. It takes a deep dive into many interesting topics, covering everything from the basin’s history and ecology, to cichlid taxonomy, cichlid conservation, and everything in between. I believe it is a fantastic addition to the corpus of resources available to hobbyists.
The site owner and author, Peter Geoge, is a very well-known and respected member of the cichlid hobby. In fact, Peter is one of the most knowledgeable hobbyists that I know. If you have questions about Lake Victorian cichlids, there is a 97% chance he’ll have the answer. For more about Peter, see the interview I did with him in 2024.
The photo above (taken by Kim Pedersen) was provided by Peter as an example of a species (one of many) long thought to be extinct. Why was it thought extinct? Check out the website.
