New flake and stick food

There are lots of well known and not-so well known commercial brands of fish foods available for your cichlids. In addition, some hobbyists make their own food. While some of the bigger brand names like Northfin, Cobalt, Hikari, Omega One, and New Life Spectrum dominate the American market, there are several lesser known companies who sell good food products.

If you’ve followed the blog for a while, you’ll remember my post in 2016 about a new brand that hit the market. That company, Aquarium Life Support Systems, will be bringing a worm mix to market very soon. I received a sample the other day of a new formulation of sticks and flakes. Similar to their previous release of a calanus and spirulina mix, this new flake is hand broken.

Flakes are produced in large, flat sheets. In order to package those sheets, the flakes are either augered or hand broken. The latter results in much larger flakes. This is good for your larger fish that won’t bother with little pieces.

If you prefer the sticks, they’re similar in size to the calanus sticks. I feed my fish the calanus mix both in flakes and sticks, and they love them. In fact, my Altolamprologus calvus are strangely very picky and they inhale the sticks.

Labels have not been printed for the new food, but I got my hands on the cut sheet, which describes both the flakes and sticks as well as lists the ingredients. The new food isn’t specific to cichlids, but don’t let that deter you. Like the calanus and spirulina mix, this new worm formulation contains more filler as the primary ingredient than I prefer, but I let my fish determine their preference. If the fish like the food, I notice little or no tank cloudiness, and the fish maintain good color and energy, then I consider the food a winner.
