New 34g custom tank

34g tank, fully set up but without cichlids. Photo by the author.

Earlier this year, I posted about custom tanks. In that post, I mentioned getting a 34g tank from Glasscages. Over the past several weeks, I have been fishless cycling that tank.

In order to keep my tanks cycled when they’re new or when I move my cichlids around, I like to keep dither fish. For the 34g tank, I added five danios that I recently picked up from a LFS. I tend to use zebra or giant danios as dithers because 1) they’re very active, 2) they’re inexpensive, 3) they fit my source water, and 4) they’re hardy.

The tank will eventually house some shell dwellers, though not sure which ones. It is currently set-up with the following (see photo above):

  • Five zebra danios
  • Oase EcoFlow 150
  • Fluval E-series 150 watt heater
  • Holey rock
  • River rock
  • Cerami caves
  • Plastic plants
  • Pool sand
  • Aquarium sand
  • Emergency air pum w/ airstone
