Environmental impact of aquariums

Trailer for the documentary “Aquariums: The Dark Hobby”

A new documentary about aquariums, specifically marine (saltwater) aquariums, was released the last week of March. Produced by US actor Martin Sheen, “Aquariums: The Dark Hobby” supposedly targets the detrimental impacts of the home aquarium hobby on marine ecosystems.

So, what does this have to do with cichlids? Directly, nothing. However, the aquarium trade in general (salt or freshwater), specifically the collection of fish, isn’t without its problems. I haven’t watched the film yet, so I can’t speak to the actual content.

Sadly, the trailer doesn’t provide much information other than providing some “facts” about the marine fish trade. It is abundantly clear, however, that the intent of the documentary is to cast shade on the hobby.

If you watch the full documentary and care to comment here, please do so. I am interested in your thoughts.
