Albino Thorichthys meeki (Firemouth)

Adult albino Thorichthys meeki pair. Photo by Art Parola from Reef2Rainforest’s website.

For you Central American enthusiasts, it seems there is a new albino strain of the firemouth cichlid (Thorichthys meeki).

Based on a recent blog post on Reef2Rainforest’s website, a new, apparently line-bred strain of this popular cichlid has entered the hobby. According to the post, the strain first appeared in Thailand a few years ago but has just recently made it to the US.

As for the strain’s availability in the hobby, the pair in the photo above is currently housed at Aquarium Design Group’s headquarters in Houston, TX and is listed at $299.99. The post’s author, Art Parola, also states that some online vendors have them as well, but he doesn’t identify the vendors.

About the strain’s ongoing availability and sustainability, Parola wrote the following:

As long as the strain is reasonably strong, it will likely be mass-produced at some time in the future, dropping the price considerably. However, in the short term, the striking appearance will command a premium as supply is going to take some time to catch up with demand.

I encourage you to check out the blog post, where there are more photos of the pair above.
